HISTORICAL SCOTLAND

Ilustración de E. C.
The Romans came to Scotland from Britain and they fought against The Scots. But they couldn't conquer them. The Romans built the wall to separate England and Scotland but they were not always successful. They left in the 5th century. One of the most important areas of Scottish history is the relationship between the Scots and the English. There have always been difficulties. These often led to war. You can see the film "Braveheart" just to have an idea how things were centuries ago. Below you have a trailer of this film, pay attention to the clothes and places you see. You will get an image of this land in those years. Not all the things said in the film are true but some of them are

Later on there were more fights to become the king of Scotland. Both John Comyn and Robert the Bruce argued until Bruce killed Comyn. Bruce kept on fighting against the English. At the end the large English army lost to a small number of brave Scots. And Scotland was at least free from the English. If you want to know more about this period, click here

Throughout history and in all aeas of life there have been Scots whose names and work hae been famous during their lifetime and have lived on after their death. For example David Hume, the philosopher, Adam Smith, the economist, David Livingstone, the explorer, or the scientist Alexander Fleming. What about your region? Look for important people in any field and write about them.

  1. First of all, I'm going to talk a little about Galician history.
As I think you know, Galicia is one of the most old countries in the world, owing to that it was born as a Roman territory in 19 BCE. However, there were some preromanic cultures that lived here before the Roman (like the Celtic).
The first rests of human activity here in Galicia are from Paleolitic Era (300000 years ago). Nevertheless, they're better-known the rests that belong to Neolitic Era (also known as Megalitic Era), because they're incredible monuments made of enormous blocks of stone! They're called dolmens and menhirs, and some of them were used as tombs, even though we don't know the use of the rest.
Nonetheless, the most popular Galician preromanic culture is the Castro Culture (in Galician: cultura castrexa), whose settlements are conserved today. Castro Culture was born at the end of the Bronze Age and it was the dominant culture in Galicia until the Roman Era. People of the Castro Culture lived in a sort of settlement that is surrounded by a stone wall, called castro. Castros were usually built in very high mountains to see the enemies that tried to attack them.
Despite that these monuments were strong and very well built, they couldn't do anything with the incredible strenght of the Roman Empire, and the Roman Culture was finally imposed in Galicia. As I have said at the begining, Galicia was born as a Roman territory in 19 BCE, and little by little the Roman Culture was mixed with the Castro/Gaelic Culture. That mixture produced some own cultural characteristics like our own language: the Galician language.
    * If you want to know more about the castros, let's go to this web page (in Spanish):
    http://www.xente.mundo-r.com/fillosdebreogan/castros.html
After the Roman Era, Galicia was invaded by other cultures, but I'm not going to talk about them because I don't want to be too boring. However, I'm going to compare only one thing between the history of Scotland and Galicia: wars because of the independence.
As you should know, at first Galicia and the North of Portugal were an independent kingdom inside of the Iberic Peninsula that had its own kings and queens, but in 1230 Galicia was included into the Castile Kingdom, so its independence finished. Because of that some wars happened, but today the wars have finished, just like the Scottish ones.

  2. OK, I think it's enough, so now I'm going to talk about important people in Galicia, answering to the question that the teacher has made at the begining of this post.
First of all, I have to talk about Rosalía de Castro (comparing her with the Scottish writer Stevenson) because she was, from my point of view, an essential person in our culture, owing to that she defended the use of our language and she wrote the best book of poetry in Galician: "Cantares Gallegos".
Also important was the man who invented the calculator: Ramón Verea. Don't you know that the calculator was invented by a Galician?
*If you want to check it, go to this web page (in Galicia):
    http://www.lavozdegalicia.es/hemeroteca/2006/10/21/5214910.shtml
Also well-known in Spanish history is Franco, the dictator that governed Spain after the Spanish Civil War. He was born in Ferrol, so he was Galician.
But you don't have to go to the past to talk about important Galician people. For example, Marta Sánchez, an important Spanish singer, was born in A Coruña, and Paula Vázquez, the presenter of "Pekín Express", is Galician, too. However, I think that the most famous Galician person of the moment is María Castro, an actress that has worked in a very successful serie of the Spanish TV: "Sin Tetas No Hay Paraíso".
*If you want to see her acting when she started her career, you can look at this video (in Galician):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=All3o01r8wM
Briefly, Galicia is a place with a lot of history, some of it related with the independence of the territory. It also has many famous people, just like Scotland.

Romans were and lived in britain and they keep the scots and the English apart with a wall, which today we can see.Romans were in Galicia too.
Wallace just wanted to be a free country and he fought against English. He won because he was very brave and clever, but somebody betrayed him and the king ordered him to be killed.
Bruce in 1314 won English army and scotland was at last free from the English.
Throughout history and in all areas of life there have been Scots very famous as Fleming.

  5. This chapter is amazing. It talks about historic wars and famous people. The bad thing is that, in this chapter, Scotland and Galicia are not similar.
Scotland always wanted to be independent, and also Galicia, but the difference is that Galicia prefered a federation with Portugal for the one hand. For the other hand, Galicia wanted to be independent, but not a lot. This independence was created by nationalismes. There aren't any war with the Romans or the English, but there are battles like Elviña battle. However, this battle was in the 19th century, and the most important wars in Scotland was in the early centuries C.A.
There aren't any wall like Hadrians wall, but I know that in the Middle Age, cities were isolated to obey the governement (in Spain, Numancia, for example).
I don't know if there are films about Galicia's history, but there are movies filmed here ("Mar adentro", for example).
There are famous galician people (overcoat writers): Emilia Pardo Bazan, Valle-Inclan, Rosalia de Castro...And today famous people are Luz Casal, Mariano Rajoy, Susana Seivane or Manuel Fraga.
I have already said some writers: Rosalia de Castro, Castelao, Vicente Risco...But I haven't said yet some inventors. I know only one: Alexandre de Fisterra. He invented the table football or "futbolin". Other galician invention is the calculator.
Today, Galicia and Spain haven't got any problem among themselves, but a lot of people in Galicia want it independence.

Sorry, I think that I wrote not much.

  9. I didn’t know so much about Galicia’s history before, so I made a short research and this is the result:

“The name of Galicia comes from Gallaecia, the first name that the Romans gave to the region of the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. This region was between the North of Duero’s river and the West of the Pisuerga’s river, and historians believe that it was dwelt since Neolithic, when a population called “celtas” decided to colonize it. This population resisted Roman’s invasion for a long time but, between 23 and 19 BC, a process called “Roman Pax” prevailed, and the Romans began to teach their own language (Latin), imposed their own coin (denarius, sestertius...) and their own Gods (Mars, Saturn, Venus...)

When the Roman’s rule fished, the Germanics invaded Gallaecia. Some years later (456) Visigothics won the war and they governed since 550 when the celtas came back and stayed here, forever.
In the eighth century, when Muslims invaded almost all the Iberian Peninsula, Galicia was one of the few regions that were not invaded because of his situation and, because of that, they were who fought against Muslims and won back the Iberian Peninsula in fifteenth century.

In the last centuries the population of Galicia had to emigrate because there were a backward economic movement because of the wars between Portugal and Spain, the attacks with the English in the ports and, of course, because Spain forbade all the business with America. Galician decide to emigrate first to the cost, searching jobs in the fabrics and then, when there were no more jobs in A Coruña or Vigo, they began to emigrate to South America.

At the same time, it began a social, cultural and politic movement in favour of Galician language; this movement was called “Rexurdimento”. In this movement a lot of Galician people had to emigrate because they defended Galician and in nineteenth century Galician was badly seen or, worse, forbidden.

  10. As many battles happened in Scotland and, some of them, they are remembered today, in Galicia there were a lot of them too. One of them is the one that happened in A Coruña, in 1589, against the English navy when Maria Mayor Fernandez de Cámara y Pita, turned into the heroine of the defense. On the 4th of May the English troops, having surrounded the city of Coruña, opened a gap in the city wall and began the invasion of the old city, directed by an ensign that achieved to rise to the highest part of the city wall. Maria Pita killed him and the tradition says that this fact was carried out to the shout of "The one who has honour, follow me ". This happen demoralized the English troop and it was the cause of their retreat. When the battle ended, she helped to gather the corpses and to take care of the injured men.

Because of that, she is consider the heroine of A Coruña and her name is the name of the square where is the council, and there is also a monument to her.”

You can read more about Galicia in the next web pages (in English)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rexurdimento (about the social movement call “Rexurdimento”)
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Pita (about Maria Pita’s story)

Finally I’m going to talk a bit about some famous people with Galician origins because in this chapter of the book we can find many famous Scottish people as inventors or discoverers of the past (Alexandre Fleming and David Livingston), but there are also some very famous prominent figures that are Galician, in his majority big writers who today are known nationally as Rosalía de Castro, Curros Enríquez, Gonzalo Torrente Ballester, Emilia Pardo Bazán, Camilo Jose Cela or Ramon Valle Inclán; but also people that nowadays are famous actors or famous presenters of television, betweenthem we can find: Silvia Jato, Jesús Vázquez, Paula Vázquez or Maria Castro; fashionable designers who have triumphed throughout the world: Amancio Ortega (INDITEX), Adolfo Domínguez, Roberto Verino or Antonio Pernas.

It is the fifth site in Scotland to be placed on the World Heritage List.

Hadrian built a wall for separate England and Scotland but finally the romans left britain and Hadrian's Wall was never used again althought there are remains.
In Galicia there is a wall in Lugo, which was built as a defense by the barbarian threat.
the English and the Scots fight in the 14th century. Scotland there wasn't king and the king of England was Edward I. The people accept Edward for King, except one man called William Wallace.
The English leader sent soldiers to fight against William. William escaped into the mountains but in the end the English found him and took Wallace to London. He tought that Wallace died, his problems end.
Braveheart is a good film, but it had a big mistake: ther relationship between Wallace and Isabella (wife of Edward II). And also says that they had a chilg, but Edward III was not born until seven years after Wallace died.
From the 18th century, in Scotland, the famous people are David Hume (the philosopher) and Adam Smith (the economist). from the 19th there are a scientist John Clerk Maxwell and the explorer David Livingstone, In galicia in this century there are Rosalia de Castro and Eduardo Pondal. 16. The Romans tried to conquer Scotland, but they couldn't, here in Galicia, they tried too, and in this case, they won, they tried to impose their language, the Latin, thanks of that, our language changed into a mix of the Latin and the old Galician. Nowadays, that language has evolved into our actual language, the Galician. The Romans called Gallaecia to Galicia.

The Romans built a wall around Scotland to protect themmselves from the scots. Here in Galicia, they did something similar, they built a wall in Lugo to protect themselves from the barbarians.

The people who lived in Galicia tried to defend their home, they were called the celtics.

In Galicia, like in Scotland, there were and there are lots of famous people, for example, our writers (Rosalia de Castro, Manuel Antonio, Pondal,...), or our painters (Carlos Maside, Luís Seoane, Torres, Laxeiro,...) or our policians (Fraga).

Robert Louis Stevenson was one of the best scotish writer, here in Galicia there lots of important writers, for example: Rosalia de Castro, Pondal, Risco, Anxel Fole, Manuel Antonio, Rafael Dieste, Amado Carballo, etc).

James Watt is the most important inventor in Scotland, here in Galica we can highligh Ramon Verea, he was the firs person who made a kind of calculator which made direct multiplications.

  17. Like I don't know nothing about the Galician history, for that I comment briefly about Scotland's History.
The Romans in 43Ad came to Britain. The roman imperator Hadrian builds a wall to keep the Scots and the English apart. William Wallace was a man that wanted Scotland to be a free country; Wallace was a good fighter and a brave man. He did the best to fight against the English. But finally King Edward ordered him to be killed.

Braveheart: In the film Braveheart a lot was fact but not all. The biggest mistake was the idea that there was a relationship between Wallace and Isabella (the wife of Edward second).

Robert the Bruce, less than a year after William Wallace's death, Robert the Bruce was the new king of Scotland, and he continued the fight against the English. He finally made Scotland free from the English.

    Famous Scots
Robert Louis Stevenson; Stevenson’s most famous book is "the strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde"

  20. Well, I'm going to start this comment talking about the history of Galicia, his origin

The name derived from the toponym Gallaecia. With this name the Romans
identified in the province of the Roman Empire which covered a third of
Iberian peninsula north of the Douro River and west of the river
    Pisuerga.
Although in this vast land area lived human groups
settled since Neolithic times, the name comes from the Celts (known
as "Celtic Urnenfelder" ('fields polls'), a group of
Indo-Europeans who settled in the peninsula during the period
Chalcolithic (from 2300 to 1800 BC) and later from
fourth century C. (Celtic Hallstatt culture or Sefes).
The Celts first appear in the texts of the Greek historian
Hecataeus of Miletus in the year 517 a. C. refers to them with
kéltis κέλτης name ('hidden'). It is possible that the name comes
Greek mythology, which stood as the Celtic people
Celtus1 descendant of becoming Celti (céltae) to join
    Latin.
However the term was too generic celtae to identify the major
variety of Celtic settlements in Europe, so they soon began
to be classified according to their languages or deities
venerated. Thus in the British Isles could be found
Goidelic Celts and Britons among other clans, while those of
Iberian peninsula became known as καλλαικoι (kallaikoi) as
Strabo recounts in the first century C.
While kallaikoi was just the name of the Galician Celtic clans
located around the mouth of the Douro River, this term ended
identifying all Northwest peninsular.2 The reason must
found in its location, a beautiful area and river crossing
maritime favored the primacy of the populi (population) call
Cale (modern Porto), 3 and whose inhabitants would be called caleci or
Gallaeci by Pliny the Elder. This derived later in the ethionic
Calecia or Gallaecia (Galicia) to the north and Cale Porto (Portugal) to sur.4
The name of the territory is consolidated in the year 239 AD C. with
administrative reform by Diocletian when it is created
Gallaecia segregated from the province to cover Tarraconensis
    conventus Bracarensis, Asturiacensis and Lucensis.
The name is retained even in Arabic on the maps and texts of
chroniclers of the Umayyad Caliphate of Cordoba, will appear as Jalikiah, Yiliquí
or Yilliquiyya. Then would result in Galiza, Galicia and French
    Galyce.
As regards the etymology, the most established theory (of Higino Martins
1990) indicates that Galicia comes from the Indo-European root kala ('refuge
coat '), which became as gall gaélicas languages (mother earth). This
theory is also consistent with those involving the etymon of the Mother Goddess
of the Celts, Cal-Leach, 5 as the radical and Latinized Cale, 6 of which
analysis identifies the meanings of 'stone', 'rock' or 'hard' in
consistent with the granitic terrain on which they settled these
    clans.

  21. The history os Scotland is similar :

The history of Scotland is similar:

The history of Scotland begins around 10,000 years to the present, when modern humans began to inhabit Scotland after the end of the Würm or Wisconsin glaciation, the last ice age. Of the civilizations of the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age that existed, there are many artifacts, but they were few written records.

The 120 miles of Hadrian's Wall delineating the border between Scotland, the north and the Roman Empire to the south, small forts and gates spaced at a distance of a mile Romana. Roman rule was further north but did not last long.
The written history of Scotland begins with the arrival of the Roman Empire in Britain when the Romans occupied what is now England and Wales, administering it as the Roman province of Britannia. To the north was territory not governed by the Romans - Caledonia. His people were the Picts. From a classical historical viewpoint, Scotland seemed a peripheral country, slow to make progress that filtered from the source of Mediterranean civilization, but growing knowledge of the past, it has become apparent that some developments were more primitive and more advanced than previously thought and that the seas were very important to Scottish history. Since the beginning of the eighth century until the thirteenth century were the Celts who were in charge of the Scottish crown, the first Scottish King Kenneth McAlpin was, which began in 840, and the last was Alexander III, who ended his reign in 1249 . After the Norman colonization, it was they who dominated the country (1286-constitution of the vote). Due to the geographical orientation of Scotland and its heavy reliance on maritime trade routes, it had close ties in the south and east with the Baltic countries, and France via Ireland and mainland Europe. Following the Act of Union and the subsequent Scottish Enlightenment and Industrial Revolution, Scotland became one of the commercial powers, intellectual and industrial Europe. Its industrial decline followed World War II was particularly acute, but in recent decades the country has enjoyed something of cultural and economic renaissance, fueled in part by a surge in financial services, oil and gas revenues in the North Sea and more recently, a parliament returned.

  22. The Romans came to Scotland from Britain and they fought against The Scots. But they couldn't conquer them. There were romans in Galicia too, they left many customs here. They introduced here their way of life, and other things.
The Romans built the wall to separate England and Scotland but they were not always successful. I don't know if the romans built any walls here to separate some area, but they built a lot of monuments, like the Hércules tower. I don't know any film where the romans fought in Galicia, but I think that there was one majjor battle.
There isn't a king in Galicia, because it belong to Spain.
Throughout history and in all aeas of life there have been Scots whose names and work hae been famous during their lifetime and have lived on after their death. For example David Hume, the philosopher, Adam Smith, the economist, David Livingstone, the explorer, or the scientist Alexander Fleming. What about your region?
In my region lived a lot of important people for Galicia. There was a writer, called "Rosalía de Castro", he wrote books very importants for Galicia, and now she is remembered as a very important person.
There was a woman called "María Pita", she fought against the Brtitish to help Galicia.
I don't know what else to write.

  23. The name derives from the toponym Gallaecia. Romans identified in the province of the Roman Empire, which covered a third of Although Iberian Peninsula in this vast area of land inhabited by human groups inhabited since the Neolithic Age, the name comes from the Celts a group
Indo-Europeans who settled in the peninsula during the period (2300-1800 BC and later in the fourth century AD.
It is possible that the name comes Greek mythology, it was like the Celts America. This resulted later in the ethionic Gallaecia (Galicia) to the north and Cale Porto (Portugal) south establishing
Gallaecia segregated to cover Tarragona province Bracarensis conventus, Asturiacensis and Lucensis. Then, would result in Galiza
This theory for the derivation of the Mother Goddess of the Celts, Cal-Leach, Latinized as radical and Cale, of which 6 analysis identifies the meanings of 'stone', 'rock' or 'hard' in consistent with the granitic terrain in the introduction of these clans.
The history of Scotland is similar:

The history of Scotland begins around 10,000 years to the present, when modern humans began to inhabit Scotland after the end of the Würm or Wisconsin glaciation, the last ice age. Of civilizations we have few written records.
The 120 miles of Hadrian's Wall demarcate the border between Scotland, the north and south Roman Empire, forts and gates spaced at a distance of one mile Northward Romana was territory not governed by the Romans - Caledonia. After the Act of Union and the subsequent Scottish Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution, Scotland became one of the commercial powers, intellectual and industrial Europe

  24. The Romans were one of the best empires of the history. They conquered Galicia, but they couldn't do the same thing in Scotland. Our language comes from the Latín. There, in the UK, they built a wall between Scotland and England. This idea was to separate the Scots of the English.

Here in Galicia, there's something similar like the wall, we have the Lugo wall, built for the Romans, too. We also have the Cathedral Of Santiago de Compostela.

Here in Galicia there are and there were a lot of famous people, like happens in Scotland. I'm going to write some examples of famous Galician people: we have a lot of famous writers like Valle-Inclan, Rosalía de Castro, Curros Enriquez,...
The most famous sportmen are Amancio, Fernando Romay, Oscar Pereiro, Michel Salgado,...

Now, I'm going to say some of the most famous people in Scotland like: the inventor James Watt, the pilot of F1 Jackie Stewart, the economist Adam Smith, the scientist John Clerk Maxwell and the most famous scientist and inventor Alexander Fleming.

  25. I think it was the hardest chapter of the book. We have to compare Galician and Scotland’s history, and as I didn't know so much about this topic, I had to look for information. The book is a good reference to learn some things about Scotland, and Internet helped me to understand some aspects about Galician history.

Before the roman invasion, the Celtics were the people who had the power in Galicia. We had the Castro culture. In this time, people lived in “castros”. The Castros were circular hill forts with multiple concentric walls.

In the 218 BC the Romans came to the Iberia peninsula, a few years before going to Scotland. They arrived to the northeast of the peninsula, and then they decided to move further the west. While they walked, they fought against the Carthaginians ; they wanted to conquer our country.

They wanted to conquer Galicia because we have a wide range of minerals. Finally, Galicia became a Roman province. They taught us their culture, and they kept our own culture. The result was a mix of both cultures. For example, they tried to teach us the Latin, their language. It mixed with the language spoken in Galicia before the romans, and the result was the Galician, a new language.

Some years later, the Germans defeated the Romans and they invaded Gallaecia.

Then, Muslims entered in the peninsula, but they could conquer Gallaecia. Here, people were absolutely Christians, and they didn’t accept this new religion. They fought against the Muslims and they won back the Iberian Peninsula.

In the fourteenth century, there was a revolution were a lot of peasants participated. They wanted to finish with the fiefs, because their lords were very hard. Finally, the peasants won.

Galicia lived some wars, but these wars were lived in the entire peninsula, like the independence war, and confrontations like the happened against the English army, in the sixteenth century.

Some years later, Galicia started to been marginalized of the rest of Spain. People who talked Galician was considerate lower and simple. This situation was difficult for many people, they couldn’t speak their own language; because of this, a political movement started to appear in Galicia.

I think we also have a hero like William Wallace but in our case, this person is a female. Maria Mayor Fernandez de Cámara y Pita is a heroin because she is the person who motivated people who lived in La Coruña to fight against the British army, and she almost participated in the war. I think she’s a very important woman for all of us, and because of that she had a sculpture in a place that has her name, Maria Pita’s square.

I’ve never seen a film whose theme is the history of Galicia, but seen a film about this topic could be interesting.

  26. Now, I’m going to talk about famous people born in Galicia.

Looking for information, I found a long list with the name of a lot of important people born in Galicia, but I’m going to talk about a few people.

For beginning, I think I will talk about a writer, like Louis Stevenson. I could talk about a lot of people like Castelao or Cunquiero, but I decided to talk about Rosalía de Castro. She’s one of the most important writers for Galicia.
He defended our language, and she was a great poet. She became an important figure of the Galician Romantic Movement, known today as the renaissance. Her poetry is marked by a combination of nostalgia, longing and melancholy. She married Manuel Murguía, member of the Galician Academy. The couple had seven children. The date she published her first collection of poetry in Galician, Cantares gallegos ("Galician Songs"), the 17th May of 1863, is commemorated every year as the Día das Letras Galegas (I spoken of this day on my last post). Poverty and sadness marked her life. She was a strong opponent of abuse of authority and defender of women's rights. She suffered from cancer of the womb and died of this illness. Her image appeared on the 500 peseta Spanish banknote.

I only found the name of an inventor born in Galicia, Alejandro Finisterre, but I’m not going to talk about him (if you want to know more, you can visit this page:
    http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alejandro_Finisterre).

I want talk about an important employer (because I think nobody is going to talk about him), one of the richest people in the world. He’s Amancio Ortega. He’s the founder of the Inditex Group. He was a normal person. His father wasn’t billionaire. Little by little, and working hard, he was getting money, and founding new stores. Now, he’s the richest men in Spain, the second in Europe and the tenth in the world.

Here, we have a list of famous people born in Galicia, I recommend it to you.
    http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anexo:Personajes_destacados_de_Galicia

And if you want to learn more about Galician history, you can visit this webpages:

I want to say that I learned a lot writing this post. I discovered that I didn’t know some things about my country’s story.

  27. The romans came to Britain but after some years they decided to move further north into Scotland, then they decided to fought a war against the Scots. It would be a good idea to keept the Scots and the English apart, they build a wall from west to east across the north of England. The idea was to stop the Scots coming into England. This wall called Hadrian´s Wall,is 117 kilometres long and 5 metres high.they also built castles along the wall. For next three hundred years there were Roman soldiers on Hadrian´s Wall but sometimes the Scots broke through the wall and they just sailed around the end of it.
In Galicia there is a wall in Lugo, which was built as a defense by the barbarian threat.

On the 14th century the king of England was Edward and many of important peoplein Scotland promised to accept Edward, but not a man called Willian Wallace. The English leader sent soldiers to fight against William. William escaped into the mountains but in the end the English found him and took Wallace to London. He tought that Wallace died, his problems end.

Braveheart it is a film about the life of William Wallace. It has a big mistake was the idea that there was a relationship between Wallace and Isabella, the wife of Edward II.The film also says that they had a child, who later became King Edward III,but in fact,at that time,Isabella was only three years old.

Robert Louis Stevenson is one of the best-known Scottish writers, his most famous books are "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll" and "Mr Hyde".
In Galicia the most famous writers were Rosalia de Castro,Eduardo Pondal,Curros Enriquez...

One of Scotlans´s most famous inventors was James Watt. Many people believe that James Watt invented the first steam engine.
Ramón Silvestre Verea García was a inventor and ha was born in Galicia.

The most famous Scottish inventions are:the bicycle, tne car tyre, the telephone, the medicine penicilin, the television...

  28. The histotory of scotland and galician is very similar:
    the history of galician:
The name of Galicia comes from Gallaecia, the first name that the Romans gave to the region of the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula.when a population called celtas decided to colonize it. This population resisted Roman’s invasion the Romans began to teach their own language Latin, imposed their own coins and their own Gods In the last centuries the population of Galicia had to emigrate because there were a backward economic movement. “Rexurdimento”. In this movement a lot of Galician people had to emigrate because they defended Galician.
    Famous people of scotlan:
David Hume (the philosopher) and Adam Smith (the economist). from the there are a scientist John Clerk Maxwell and the explorer David Livingstone Alexander Fleming and Jackie Stewart Robert Louis Stevenson was a famous lighthouse engineers.Stevenson wrote 'the strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

  29. Galicia’s History:

When the Romans arrived in Galicia, they called it Gallaecia. The residents of Galicia at this time were the Celtics, who arrived here between the centuries IV and III BC. The Celtics were grouped in clans like the Scottish families at the present.

When the Romans went away, in the century V AD, other people came to live in Galicia: the suevos. They were very braves and they fought a lot.

Then of this, the Arabians went to Galicia to help the visigodos but I don’t know much more about the Galicia’s History.

I have to recognize that I don’t know a lot about this topic because I hate the History.

    Galician famous people:

Oscar Pereiro is a famous cyclist who was born in Mos, Pontevedra. From 2006, he’s very famous because he won the France Tour. I think that he’s one of the best Galician sportsman and I like him.

Rosalía de Castro was a famous writer who was born in Santiago de Compostela. She wrote very important Galician books like Follas Novas and Cantares Gallegos. She used to write poetry and I think that she’s very famous!

Luís Tosar is a Galician actor who was born in Cospeito, Lugo. He appeared in a lot of famous films like Te doy mis ojos and Celda 211. He also won a lot of prizes like a Goya. I think that he’s very good and he will be a very important actor.

In general I think that in Galicia we have a lot of important famous people and I’m proud of this.

  30. The Galicia's history and the Scotland’s history are very similar. The Romans, like in Scotland, invaded Galicia. Galicia, before, was called Gallaecia. The Romans came to Galicia in 137 AC and it was invaded by Dacio Junio Bruto.
In Galicia, we are a lot of famous people, like:
Rosalía de Castro was a very famous poet and novelist in the 19th century. I think that the most important book of the Galician culture was "Cantares Gallegos". This book was written by Rosalía de Castro.
Valle-Inclán was a very famous poet and novelist too, but in the 20th century.
Franco was a military Spanish dictator. He was born in Ferrol.

These people were very important in the Galicia's history, but now, we have a lot of important people too like:
Jesus Vázquez is a popular television host in Galicia, but in the rest of Spain is very popular too.
Paula Vázquez is other popular television hostess in all Spain too.
Mario Casas is a famous actor and he was born in A Coruña because he acted in the television series “Los hombres de Paco”, other famous actress is Maria Castro, she was known in the Galician television series "Platos Combinados” when she was a child.

  31. The history of Galicia and Scotland is linked to Celtic in their origins. The Scotland there was a war in the fourteenth century because his boss Adriano Romans conquered Britain but not Scotland were conquered so They built a wall to separate England from Scotland. In Galicia sent to a wall in Lugo, but in this case were the Romans not to invade the Bárvaros.

Both in Scotland and Galicia are very famous people in Scotland Alexander Fleming (chemist), James Watt (mathematical) or Sir Alex Ferguson (manager) and Galicia Rosalia de Castro (writer), Luis Suarez (soccer) or Ramon Verea ( inventor).

  32. When the Romans arrived in Scotland fought against the Scots. But the Romans could not defeat the Scots. That is why the Romans built a wall to separate England and Scotland. The english people have a special relationship with Scotland because they identify a lot with that country.
In Galicia the wall is more significant in Lugo, who served to protect the city from the Barbarians.
In Scotland the people of that time wore skirts and strange clothes. In Galicia didn't wore skirts, but the clothing of that time was strange in all countries.
In Scotland there were many kings who fought for their country as in Galicia but more intensely lived in Scotland.
I think Galicia and Scotland do not look like much in this sense because the Romans lived in Galicia and in Scotland the Romans tried to take over the country but could not.
